Kyrenia / Girne

Welcome to Kyrenia (Girne)

Kyrenia is the best-known town on the north coast of Cyprus, a place where a sheltered harbour, a medieval castle and a ridge of limestone mountains sit within a few minutes of each other. The old harbour is the heart of daily life, with fishing boats, cafes and restaurants beneath the castle walls. It works equally well for a week of sun and for the first stretch of a longer move.

Who stays in Kyrenia

Kyrenia draws holiday makers, visiting families and people planning a move. International tourists come for the sea, the harbour evenings and the easy day trips to castles, villages and beaches, and many return year after year. Families visiting relatives, and visitors to Girne American University and the University of Kyrenia, need room to spread out for a while. Property investors and relocators come to see what daily life is like before they commit to a purchase or a long-term rental. All of them tend to prefer a home to a hotel, and many start with a holiday and extend as plans firm up.

Reaching Kyrenia and moving around

Kyrenia is roughly a 40-minute drive from Ercan International Airport, depending on traffic, and guests also fly into Larnaca and cross by road at one of the checkpoints. The Girne–Lefkoşa (Nicosia) road runs over the mountains to the capital, and the coastal road west links the town with Alsancak and Lapta. Within the town, the old harbour, the castle and many cafes are close enough to walk, minibuses run to Nicosia and the surrounding villages, and a hire car helps for the beaches and mountain roads. Tell us when you land and we will help with directions.

Landmarks worth visiting

Kyrenia packs a remarkable amount of history and scenery into a small area.

Kyrenia Harbour

A sheltered horseshoe of stone quays lined with cafes and restaurants, overlooked by the castle: an easy place to spend an evening, best seen at sunset.

Kyrenia Castle

A fortress beside the harbour, built up over centuries. Its walls and courtyards can be explored on foot, and it houses a museum devoted to an ancient shipwreck recovered from the sea off Kyrenia.

Bellapais Abbey

The ruins of a Gothic abbey stand in the hillside village of Bellapais above Kyrenia, with long views over the coast: a favourite for a quiet morning visit followed by lunch in the village.

The Kyrenia mountain range rising behind the town and sea

St Hilarion and the mountains

A rugged range runs along the north coast behind the town, with walking routes, viewpoints and the hilltop castle of St Hilarion, whose towers rise from the ridge.

Beaches and the coast road

West of the town, the coast road passes a string of beaches, beach clubs and seafront hotels and casinos, among them the Merit resorts. Escape Beach and the shore around Alsancak are popular for long sunny days, Golden Bay and the nearby coves offer quieter swimming, and Alsancak Nature Park and the Lapta coastal walking path suit an early-morning walk. Restaurants with mountain views and sunsets over the sea round off the day.
